Day 1 — Borobudur Sunrise + City

Morning: Borobudur (4 AM – 10 AM)

  • Depart: 4 AM from Yogyakarta (1-hour drive)
  • Sunrise access: Rp 100K–350K depending on package (via Manohara Hotel or general entrance)
  • What to expect: World’s largest Buddhist temple shrouded in morning mist. 72 bell-shaped stupas, 500+ Buddha statues, 2,672 relief panels. Absolutely breathtaking at sunrise.

Pro tip: Book the sunrise package through Manohara Hotel (inside the temple complex). It’s more expensive but you enter before general admission and get the temple nearly to yourself.

Afternoon: Kraton & Taman Sari

  • Kraton (Sultan’s Palace): Rp 15K ($0.95). Still an active royal court. Traditional Javanese architecture, gamelan performances on some days.
  • Taman Sari (Water Castle): Rp 15K ($0.95). Former royal bathing complex. Beautiful ruins with underground tunnels.

Evening: Malioboro Street

Walk Jl. Malioboro — Yogya’s famous shopping street. Browse batik, silver jewelry, and souvenirs. End at an angkringan for dinner.

Dinner: Angkringan Lik Man near Malioboro. Full meal + sweet tea: Rp 15K ($0.95).

Day 2 — Prambanan + Local Culture

Morning: Prambanan Temple (8 AM – 12 PM)

  • Entrance: Rp 50K ($3.10) for foreigners
  • What to expect: Largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia. Three main temples dedicated to Shiva, Brahma, and Vishnu. Stunning architecture, especially the Shiva temple.
  • Allow 2–3 hours for the full complex

Afternoon: Batik Workshop

  • Batik Winotosastro or Museum Batik: Learn about Yogya’s UNESCO-listed batik tradition. Some places offer hands-on workshops (Rp 50K–150K).
  • Alternative: Visit Kota Gede, the old silver-making district. Watch artisans at work.

Evening: Prawirotaman Street

The traveler area. Walk along Jl. Prawirotaman for cafes, live music, and a more relaxed vibe than Malioboro.

Dinner: Gudeg Yu Djum — try Yogya’s signature gudeg (jackfruit stew). Rp 20K ($1.25).

FAQ

Is 3 days enough for Yogyakarta? Yes, for the highlights. If you add Jomblang Cave, Merapi, and want to relax, 4–5 days is better.

Borobudur or Prambanan — if I only have time for one? Borobudur. It’s larger, more atmospheric (especially at sunrise), and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

What’s the best time to visit? Dry season (Apr–Oct) for clear skies. May–June is ideal — good weather, fewer tourists than July–August.
