Bali is an incredible base, but the islands around it are just as stunning — and way less crowded. All of these are reachable for a weekend trip.

1. Nusa Penida — Best Day/Weekend Trip

30–45 minutes by fast boat from Sanur. Dramatic cliffs, crystal-clear water, and Instagram-famous viewpoints.

Highlights:

  • Kelingking Beach — T-Rex shaped cliff (iconic photo spot)
  • Angel’s Billabong — Natural infinity pool
  • Broken Beach — Circular cliff formation
  • Manta Point — Snorkel with manta rays (Rp 350K–500K for snorkel trip)
  • Crystal Bay — Beautiful beach, good snorkeling

Budget: Rp 500K–1M ($31–$62) per day including transport, tour, lunch.

Pro tip: Rent a scooter on Nusa Penida (Rp 75K/day) rather than hiring a driver. The roads are rough but it gives you freedom. West side (Kelingking, Angel’s Billabong) can be done in one day. East side (Atuh Beach, Teletubbies Hills) is a separate day.

2. Gili Islands — Best Overnight Trip

Three tiny islands off Lombok’s northwest coast. No cars, no motorbikes — just bicycles and horse carts.

Gili T (Trawangan): Party island. Bars, diving, nightlife, backpackers. Gili Air: Calm, yoga, couples, growing cafe scene. Gili Meno: Smallest, quietest. Turtle sanctuary, honeymoon vibes.

Budget per day: Rp 400K–800K ($25–$50) for accommodation + food.

3. Lombok — Extended Weekend

Best as a 3–5 day trip from Bali. Fly (25 min) or fast boat (2–3 hours).

Highlights: Kuta Lombok beaches, Selong Belanak surf, Mount Rinjani trek.

Booking Tips

  • Fast boats: Book through your accommodation or online (Gilibookings.com, 12Go Asia). Prices are similar across providers.
  • Departure points: Sanur (for Nusa Penida/Lembongan), Padang Bai or Serangan (for Gili Islands/Lombok)
  • Weather: Avoid boats in rough seas (Dec–Feb can be choppy). Check conditions before booking.
  • Book return tickets. One-way tickets are more expensive and boats fill up.
